Paths are more than just a route to another part of your garden. They can give the garden direction and a sense of movement, draw the eye along them towards a focal point, an object or a tantalising bend. Materials again can be very varied - from crunchy gravel to rubber chips; block paving or natural stone. Edges can be used to contrast with the path – all of these various options can set the mood of the garden.
Steps are necessary to link areas on different levels and can be important features in order to frame objects or structures in a garden. Steps can be grand or simple; utilitarian or a focal point. Again many different materials are available.
